A Simple 3-Step Framework for How to Write a Screenplay
I’ve been writing screenplays for over 15 years.
I’ve read books, studied the field, and asked experienced writers for feedback.
If I had to start all over again, this is the simple 3-step framework I wish I had👇🏼
Step 1: Learn the basics of storytelling
A strong understanding of storytelling will help you create a compelling and engaging script.
3 great books to get you started:
The Nutshell Technique by Jill Chamberlain
Inside Story by Dara Marks
Into the Woods by John Yorke
Step 2: Study the structure of a screenplay
Knowing the different structures and how to format your script will make your work look more professional. Once you learn the rules, you can break them.
Then, write with an app like WriterDuet.
Step 3: Read and watch as many screenplays and movies as possible
Analyzing the work of others will help you understand the different techniques and styles used in successful screenplays and films.

Bonus Step: Let people read your screenplay.
Ask for feedback. People are still too worried about others stealing their ideas. But, there’s only one you. If someone else had your script, your movie would still be completely different.
Diversity enhances creativity.
When you’re first starting out, these steps are all that matter.
I’m happy to read your script and provide feedback.
See you tomorrow. Matt Cici
